Taking the Pledge

I, Gena, pledge to talk more about my processes, even when I can’t quite put them into words or be sure I’m being totally clear.   I’m going to put my thinking and my gut feelings out there. 

(My words now: Just so we're clear, this pledge is a quilting thing. But some folks like hearing about other process as well. I'll try not to be too personal or what my daughter calls TMI, but I may journal a bit about my return to work.)

Retired Slacker

Until recently, I was a SAHM to two lovely girls. Squeezed by the ever looming darkness of a weak economy, I plunged myself into a stream of back to work possibilities. Would I design and produce something full time at home? Would I launch into a new career? Would I have to sacrifice my weekends and family time? Would I ever see my girlfriends again? How much will I be able to make and will it be worth said sacrifices? Will my income only pay for summer camps and child care? Will I ever have the energy to share a blog post? And if so, who really wants to hear it? And will I find work that I feel good about?

An unlikely SAHM candidate I was, but after a few years I really enjoyed it. Remembering the laments of my own mother, I fully embraced this challenge. I found a gentler me, a more creative me, and I witnessed the gifts in my children. Of course I also found protective me and sometimes grumpy me. Still, the innocent wisdom of my children and their friends always nurtured and brought out a more patient and inspired me.

Through the curiosity of my children, together we have learned to paint, sew, knit, quilt, embroider, bake, garden, rollerskate, ice skate, ski, have tea parties, and enjoy this flash in the pan called life. My return to work, I will consider it my opportunity to model professionalism and a great attitude.
